What you can and cannot change

Some risk factors for vein disease are fixed: your genes (varicose veins run strongly in families), getting older, and being female. Others you can influence — how much you move, how long you stand or sit still, your weight, and whether you use compression when you need it.

Lifestyle changes will not make existing varicose veins disappear. What they can do is ease symptoms like aching and swelling, slow the condition down and lower the risk of complications.
